Industrial Lubricants & the Engineering Industry

Industrial lubricants are essential to not only help maintain machines and their components. But these are also need to help ensure that industrial machines continue to function correctly. The main use of any kind of lubricant is to help reduce the amount of friction that would occur between two parts of a machine.

A large number of the industrial lubricants being used today have been developed to help prevent the chances of rust or corrosion developing on components within a machine that do not move. The large majority of lubricants one can purchase today have been made from either synthetic (chemicals) or organic materials.

Most of the organic lubricants that one can purchase today have been made from refined petroleum. Whereas the synthetic type ones have been made through a number of chemical processes. These lubricants will then being passed through a lubrication system of pipes and tubes that direct the mixture to lube points to those parts of the machinery which require it.

The most common types of lubricants that you will have heard of are grease, oil and silicone. However, there are plenty of other compounds being used for providing lubrication and today a biodegradable version is becoming increasingly popular. The biodegradable types of lubricants now available are often used to oil machinery used in food manufacturing as sometimes by accident it may come into contact with the food.

Every type of lubricant that is available will be divided up into one of two categories. Some lubricants will be classified for use with certain machinery whilst others will be classified for use with specific devices. But no matter what each of them will have undergone numerous tests to ensure that they carry out the task that they are needed to do to the highest standard possible.

As mentioned most machinery will use either oil or grease in order to lubricate components within it. However, there are some machines and engines which will use water as a lubricant. The problem with water and some greases and oils is that they cannot withstand very high temperatures.

The best types of oils which can be used for machinery and in order to withstand high temperatures are those made from minerals or which have been synthetically produced. The majority of oils that one will use to help keep a car engine running correctly will have been made from either minerals or synthetic items.

The main aim of any lubricant is to help to ensure the smooth running of the machinery at all times. Certainly a company who maintains their machinery correctly and ensures that the parts remain well lubricated will find that they are able to produce their products far more quickly and efficiently. Today many manufacturing companies who use industrial lubricants are now looking for ways to help improve the environment by actually recycling those that they use.
